ABOUT
THE ARTIST
I
was born in Puerto Rico in 1970 and grew up both there and in the
general Boston area. Having apprenticed in the fine arts under my
father, José, for many years, I decided to further develop
the skills he had imparted on me by continuing my artistic education
at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. There, I saw the old-school,
rigorous and classicist education my father had provided me come
into sharp contrast (and often conflict) with the more lax, free-form
education art school offered. After two years at Pratt I left, having
failed to add much of any value to the great scope of knowledge
my father had already given me. In 1990 I decided to take my education
on a different path and enrolled at Boston University where I earned
a bachelor's degree in Political Science four years later. Ironically,
it was during my time there that I began to explore my own artistic
voice in earnest (a process that continues to this day).
My
principal drive as an artist is to provide a catalyst for those
inner, voiceless thoughts which cannot be provoked through conventional
language. Though a deeply personal process, the viewer is first
and foremost in my mind as I create any given piece. My work is
intended as a conversation between the viewer and artist rather
than a narcissistic monologue between artist and ego. My works aim
at the mind's eye by giving the viewer pause, time enough to reflect
on the content through very deliberate uses of color, composition
and design. I do not, however, presume any one of my pieces to be
podiums. I have no desire to preach to those who would be lead by
images. My works are merely cognitive mediums designed to stimulate
rather than mold, while striving to express the minutiae of a larger
human experience we can all relate to.
I
currently reside in a suburb south of Boston with my wife Jill and
son Max. Though they are not inspirations for my work (for it would
be a strange family indeed if they were), they are the muses that
inspire the fervent intensity of my labors.
I
hope you find my work stimulating and welcome any feedback or comments
